Kuwait Cracks Down on Public Eating During Ramadan: Fines and Jail Possible

Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior has rolled out a strict security and service plan for Ramadan, warning residents and visitors that publicly breaking the fast can lead to up to one month in jail and fines of KD 100 under Law No. 44 of 1968.

Public Fasting Rules and Enforcement

Security teams have been set up to monitor markets, mosques, and other public spaces. Surveillance cameras will help identify violations, including eating or drinking during fasting hours.

The Ministry also urges citizens and expatriates to report suspicious behavior or begging through the central operations room at 112, with teams ready to respond immediately.

Expatriates holding Article 22 residency permits—including family or visit visas—will be investigated for legality of stay. Violators may face legal action or immediate deportation, and sponsors found responsible could also face penalties.

Traffic and Security Measures

Ramadan traffic and security plans are in effect to ensure smooth travel, safe shopping, and easy access to religious sites. Intensive patrols cover main roads, intersections, and high-traffic areas, with special attention to markets and mosques.

Departments under the Ministry will follow Ramadan working hours from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM, including:

  • General Traffic Department (driving tests, inspections, licensing)

  • Residency Affairs

  • Service Centers

  • Nationality and Travel Documents

  • Air and Land Ports, including Kuwait International Airport

Digital Services and Efficiency

The Ministry has strategically deployed human and technical resources to maintain service efficiency. Citizens and expats are encouraged to use electronic systems to minimize waiting times, arrive on time, and follow official working hours.

This comprehensive approach aims to protect public order, uphold religious traditions, and ensure smooth services for residents and visitors throughout Ramadan.
