Kuwait Ends Wartime Visa and Absence Permit Extensions

The Interior Ministry in Kuwait has announced that all extensions for visit visas and absence permits will end on September 1, with normal pre-war procedures now back in place.

During the regional tensions, Kuwait had automatically extended visit visas and permits for expats who overstayed their absence periods abroad. This was done after the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Iran at the end of February, which caused major disruption to flights in and out of the country.

Because of the situation, the country’s airspace was closed for weeks, and all types of visit visas were extended automatically for expats. The ministry also extended the period for permits that allowed expats to remain outside Kuwait beyond their normal absence limit.

In a statement on its X account, the ministry said the automatic extension of visit visas for expats will stop from September 1, and the regular rules that were in place before February 28 will apply again.

The ministry also confirmed that the special extension for expats who stay outside Kuwait beyond their allowed absence period will end on September 1. However, this extension will still apply to those who leave Kuwait on or before August 31.

The ministry added that the residence permit certificate issued through the unified government e-services app Sahel is the official reference for checking the expiry date of an absence permit.
