Kuwait Proposes Limits on Naturalised Citizens' Voting Right

People who gain Kuwaiti citizenship through naturalisation would not be allowed to vote, stand for parliamentary elections or be appointed to any parliamentary body under new amendments approved by the Cabinet.

The Cabinet has approved a draft decree-law amending several provisions of the Kuwaiti Nationality Law and sent it to Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Emir of Kuwait, for review.

Under the proposed changes, the limits on political participation would apply to people who receive citizenship through naturalisation.

The amendments also introduce electronic Kuwaiti nationality certificates once citizenship status has been confirmed. These digital certificates would have the same legal value as current paper documents.

The draft law also makes the rules stricter for false additions in nationality files. If a person knowingly adds someone who is not their child or descendant to a citizenship file, the nationality of related children or descendants could be revoked if they are found to have known about the fraud.

Such cases must be proven through an investigation by the Supreme Committee for Kuwaiti Nationality Verification or by a final court ruling.

The proposed changes come as Kuwaiti authorities continue reviewing nationality records and strengthening citizenship procedures.
