Kuwait to Replace 591 Street Names With Numbers Soon

Kuwait is replacing 591 street names with numbers, dropping personal names from most public roads and spaces. The goal? To make the street naming system simpler, cleaner, and less personal.

This shift was approved in a recent meeting led by Acting Municipal Director Manal Al Asfour, and it follows a Cabinet decision made back in May 2025.

No More Random Personal Names

From now on, streets will mostly carry numbers, unless they’re named after something really significant, like:

  • Historical figures

  • Kuwait’s ruling family

  • Leaders from friendly countries (but only if it’s mutual)

Even then, those names will face strict approval processes.

Some Streets Still Get Named

While 591 streets are switching to numbers, three streets will still be named after Arab capitals or cities, keeping some regional charm in the mix.

Public areas with names not tied to individuals will stay as they are.

What’s Next?

The Cabinet already gave this plan the green light. Now it’s up to the Municipal Council to lock in the final approval.
