Kuwait Moves Closer to Enlisting Women in Military

Kuwait is getting closer to officially integrating women into its army, with top military officials confirming the move is now in its “final stages.”

This week, Kuwait’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Sabah Jaber Al Ahmad, met with senior military commanders to discuss how women will be included in the military ranks. The discussions covered both legal and administrative steps needed to make it happen, along with the importance of creating a supportive work environment for female recruits.

Part of the Army’s Modernisation Drive

“This step comes within the framework of the modernisation and development witnessed by the Kuwaiti army,” Maj. Gen. Sabah said, adding that women can bring “qualitative” contributions to various sectors in the military. He confirmed that the integration project is nearly ready for rollout.

Women First Allowed in Military in 2021

Kuwaiti women were first given the green light to join the military back in 2021. At the time, the decree issued by then Defence Minister Hamad Jaber Al Sabah allowed women to serve in the military—but only in civilian roles, mainly in medical and support services.

Wider Roles Expected for Female Recruits

Now, Kuwait appears ready to go a step further by expanding those roles, paving the way for women to serve in a broader range of positions within the armed forces.
