A fighter jet has crashed in Kuwait, with verified videos showing thick smoke rising from Al-Jahra, approximately 32 kilometers (19 miles) west of Kuwait City.
Footage verified by Al Jazeera captured dense smoke billowing over the area after a fighter plane was seen going down. Separately, CNN geolocated video that surfaced online Monday showing a jet engulfed in flames falling in a tailspin before impact.
According to CNN’s analysis, the aircraft appears to be a twin-engine fighter jet consistent with either an F-15E or an F/A-18.
Unconfirmed reports have suggested the jet may have been a US F-15, though officials have not verified the aircraft’s origin. Kuwait also operates F/A-18 fighter jets.
The CNN-verified footage indicates the crash occurred within 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of the Ali Al Salem Air Base, a United States military installation in Kuwait. However, it remains unclear which air force the aircraft belonged to or what caused the crash.
