HH Sheikh Mishal Dissolves Kuwait's National Assembly

His Highness the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al Sabah issued an Emiri decree on Thursday, Feb. 15, which called for the dissolution of Kuwait's National Assembly.

The National Assembly was dissolved because there were disrespectful remarks made by one of the lawmakers Abdulkarim Al-Kandari last week.

According to the decree, the dissolution was based on Article 107 of the constitution, which gives the Emir of Kuwait the power the dissolve the assembly by giving the reasons for the dissolution.

This article also directs for new elections to be held within two months of the assembly's dissolution.

The Emir's decree did not specify what the remarks were, nonetheless, the government boycotted the assembly on Wednesday, Feb. 1 after the assembly voted in support of the remarks.

This is the third time that the National Assembly has been dissolved in the past 18 months and the ninth time since 2006.
