Customs officers at Kuwait International Airport have successfully stopped an attempt to smuggle a large amount of drugs into the country using A4-sized paper sheets.
The smuggling attempt was discovered during a luggage scan. Upon closer inspection, officers found 1,603 sheets of A4 paper, weighing a total of 13.154kg, which were "saturated" with a "narcotic substance," according to the customs authority.
The authority described the substance as a "chemical" but did not give further details about its nature.
The passenger, a French national who arrived from London on a visitor’s visa, has been arrested. Both the suspect and the seized items have been handed over to the General Administration for Combating Drugs and Alcohol for further action.
This latest bust follows another major success for Kuwait's security forces. Just days ago, Kuwait announced the largest drug bust in its history, seizing nearly $500 million worth of a popular prescription medicine.
The seized drug, commonly known as Lyrica, is the brand name for pregabalin. It is a prescription medicine mainly used to treat nerve pain and epilepsy, but it is also frequently misused.
Sheikh Fahad Al Yousef, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, confirmed that the record-breaking haul included five tonnes of the drug in powder form and nearly four million capsules ready for sale.
