A Step Toward Supporting Families in Need

Under the recent amendment to Article 45 of the Civil Service Law, government employees can now take up to 12 months of special paid leave to be with a family member who is receiving medical treatment outside the country. To qualify for this extended leave, the employee must provide confirmation from Kuwait's Ministry of Health.

In addition to the 12 months of paid leave, the law allows employees to apply for an additional extension of up to six months without pay if needed. This change comes as a response to feedback from families facing extended healthcare treatment, offering greater flexibility and support during difficult times.

What’s Changing with the New Law?

Previously, the maximum paid leave allowed was just six months. Now, with this new policy, families can rest assured that they can stay with their loved ones for an entire year without worrying about lost wages. This policy aims to reduce stress for families and ensure that patients receive continuous emotional and logistical support during their treatment abroad.

A Humanitarian Move by Kuwait’s Ministry of Health

Kuwait’s Ministry of Health has praised the decision, calling it a "humanitarian step." The ministry highlighted that the previous six-month leave limit often led to stressful situations, disrupting the patient’s care and recovery process. With the new law, families will be able to provide the necessary support for a longer duration, which in turn helps with a smoother recovery for the patient.

The ministry also noted that this move reflects the country's commitment to family-centered care and humanitarian values. By prioritizing family support, the government is placing citizens' welfare at the core of its public policy.

Supporting Families During Tough Times

Kuwait’s extended paid leave for employees accompanying family members abroad is a welcome change that recognizes the critical role family plays in a patient’s recovery. This policy shift not only provides financial stability but also gives families the peace of mind they need during challenging healthcare journeys. As Kuwait continues to focus on humanitarian values, this change is a step toward a more supportive and compassionate system for its citizens.
