Kuwait will start using a smart home impoundment system for vehicles involved in traffic offences that carry an impoundment penalty from September 6, the General Traffic Department said.

The new system was introduced by the Ministry of Interior as part of its efforts to improve digital services and make traffic procedures easier and faster.

Instead of being kept in traffic department yards, offending vehicles will be allowed to serve their impoundment period at a designated home location.

Under the system, a smart impoundment device will be installed on the vehicle at the place where the violation is recorded. The impoundment period will start at midnight on the same day, giving the owner time to move the vehicle to the approved home impoundment location.

Motorists will pay KD10 for the device installation, along with a daily impoundment fee of KD2.

Vehicles already held in traffic impoundment yards can also be moved to the smart system, allowing owners to complete the rest of the impoundment period at home.

Once the required period is over, the motorist will receive a notification through Kuwait’s Sahel government services application and must visit a location assigned by the General Traffic Department to finish the release process.

The department said the system is designed to modernise traffic services, simplify procedures and improve service for motorists in Kuwait.

It also urged drivers to follow traffic rules and avoid violations, saying compliance with the law is important for road safety and protecting all road users.
