Kuwait has officially banned the use of insects in food products, reaffirming a decision made in 2023. The General Authority for Food and Nutrition announced this move on Tuesday, stressing that it will no longer allow any food items containing insects or worms to enter the country.
Why the Ban?
The decision is based on concerns related to halal standards. According to Kuwait’s "General Requirements for Halal Food" regulation, the inclusion of any insects or worms in food products is strictly prohibited. The ruling by the Technical Committee on this issue was aimed at protecting food safety and religious guidelines.
Ongoing Monitoring
The authorities are committed to monitoring developments closely and ensuring that the ban is enforced. Various technical departments are actively keeping an eye on food imports to prevent any insect-based products from entering the market.
