Trump Declares Iran War 'Terminated' as War Powers Deadline Passes

US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that hostilities against Iran had officially "terminated," as he sought to justify his position that congressional authorization is no longer necessary to address the ongoing conflict. The statement comes as the deadline for Trump to consult lawmakers about the war powers dispute arrives.

Speaking on the confrontation with Iran, Trump said the United States would not prematurely exit "and then have the problem arise in three more years.” In his letter to congressional leaders, Trump emphasized that there has been no exchange of fire since the ceasefire was reached earlier this year. "The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated,” he wrote.

In remarks made before leaving Washington for Florida, Trump reiterated, "We had a ceasefire, so that gives you additional time.”

Iran, meanwhile, reportedly delivered a proposal text to mediator Pakistan on Thursday evening, according to the IRNA news agency. However, the contents of the proposal remain undisclosed. Trump disclosed on Friday that he is "not satisfied" with the Iranian negotiation proposal, blaming the stalled talks on "tremendous discord" within Iran's leadership.

The White House refrained from offering specific details about the proposal, but it was reported that US envoy Steve Witkoff had submitted amendments reintroducing Tehran's nuclear program into the negotiations. Washington also imposed new sanctions on three Iranian currency firms and warned others against paying a "toll" for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, Iran's judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei stated that Tehran remains open to dialogue with the United States but would not tolerate what he described as policy "imposition" under threats.

Amid the heated tensions, the USS Gerald R. Ford departed the Middle East after participating in operations against Iran, according to a US official. The departure marks an end to one chapter of the conflict, although questions remain about how negotiations between the two nations will proceed.
