Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for $15M Over Image Misuse

British pop star Dua Lipa has launched legal action against tech giant Samsung Electronics, filing a lawsuit in a California federal court that seeks at least $15 million in damages. The case stems from allegations that Samsung used her image without authorization to promote its televisions through retail packaging.

The dispute revolves around a copyrighted photograph titled Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024, which her legal team asserts she fully owns. According to the complaint, as detailed by Reuters, Samsung allegedly featured the image prominently on the front of its TV box packaging, creating the impression that the artist endorsed the product and potentially influencing consumer purchasing decisions.

Dua Lipa’s lawyers contend that Samsung’s actions went far beyond the misuse of mere imagery, asserting violations of copyright and trademark laws, as well as her publicity rights. They argue the unauthorized use of her likeness amounted to a deliberate sales tactic, further supported by social media activity highlighted in the legal filing. One screenshot included in the complaint reportedly quotes a fan expressing they would consider buying the TV "just because Dua is on it," as cited by Reuters.

The lawsuit alleges Dua Lipa became aware of the situation in June of last year and subsequently issued a formal request for Samsung to cease using her image. However, her legal team claims the company refused to comply with her demands.

Apart from seeking financial compensation, the filing outlines how the unauthorized usage has potentially harmed Lipa’s brand value. Her representation argues that the misuse not only misled consumers into believing she endorsed the product but also risked diminishing her commercial goodwill and reputation.
