Drivers could face a Dh500 ($136) in fines and six black points if they do not give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings Abu Dhabi Police said on Monday. Advanced radars powered by artificial intelligence have been activated at many crossings in the capital to detect such violations.

Drivers were asked to wait for pedestrians to finish crossing. It comes after a pilot scheme in which motorists who flouted the rules were sent warning messages.

Authorities are now considering stationing more of the radars across the emirate, especially near schools and other pedestrian-heavy areas.

Authorities urged people to follow the rules and protect the safety of all people who use the roads.
