Kuwait Breaks Heat Record With 49°C Temperature

Kuwait just set a blazing record... Literally. On Friday, the Mataraba weather station recorded a scorching 49°C, making it the hottest place on Earth that day.

According to meteorologist Fahad Al Otaibi, this extreme heat is just one symptom of a much bigger issue: Kuwait’s desert climate is becoming harsher by the year. But he believes there’s a simple, effective solution, plant more trees.

“Afforestation is the fastest and most effective way to bring temperatures down,” Al Otaibi said. He explained that blocking sunlight or dust isn’t practical in a desert like Kuwait, but lining residential streets and sidewalks with trees could cool things down by 3 to 8 degrees Celsius and dramatically reduce dust.

Most of the dust that affects Kuwait, he added, comes from the north and southwest, meaning strategic tree planting in those areas could make a big difference.

Green Spaces Offer More Than Shade

Al Otaibi stressed that increasing vegetation cover is essential to handle the country’s intense summer heat. But it’s not just about comfort, it’s about cost, too. Green spaces can help cut down on the massive expenses of clearing sand after dust storms, making them a smart investment for both the environment and the economy.

He also urged planners to make afforestation a priority when designing new residential areas. Not only would this help fight desertification and sand encroachment, but it could also enhance the quality of life for residents.

Looking to Global Success Stories

To drive his point home, Al Otaibi pointed to China’s success in transforming many of its cities into lush, green urban zones. With the right coordination between government agencies, he believes Kuwait can follow a similar path and reap both environmental and economic benefits.
