Dust Storms Intensify in Kuwait Amid Drought and Late Rain

Kuwait is expected to face a sharp rise in dust storms this summer, with experts pointing to drought, delayed rainfall, and increased wind activity as the main culprits.

According to meteorologist Issa Ramadan, who spoke to Al Qabas newspaper, the lack of rain during the past winter and spring seasons has left the soil dry and loose, making it much easier for winds to lift and carry dust. He explained that the usual rainfall helps bind the soil together, but this year’s dry conditions have done the opposite.

“There’s been little to no rainfall, and vegetation growth in the desert has dropped. That’s making the soil even more unstable,” Ramadan said. “These conditions are intensifying the frequency and severity of sandstorms, especially during the spring and as we move into summer.”

With Kuwait already known for its intense heat, this summer is shaping up to be both hot and dusty. Ramadan added that even mild wind conditions could now be enough to trigger a dust storm, thanks to the loose desert soil.

Health authorities are urging residents, especially those with asthma and allergies, to take precautions. Face masks are being recommended when stepping outside on dusty days to help reduce exposure to airborne particles and poor air quality.

As dust storms become more common in Kuwait, experts say it’s important for people to stay updated on weather forecasts, keep windows closed during high-dust periods, and limit outdoor activity when visibility drops.
