Kuwait has crossed the 800,000 mark in diabetes cases, making it the Gulf country with the highest number of people living with the condition, according to local reports. With numbers climbing fast, health specialists are urging everyone—especially younger adults—to take screenings seriously.
Doctors Warn: Diabetes Can Be Silent
Dr. Waleed Al Dhahi, endocrinologist and President of the Kuwait Diabetes Society, said diabetes often develops quietly, without obvious signs. But behind the scenes, it can cause long-term damage like eye issues, nerve problems, and heart disease.
He stressed that once diagnosed, patients should follow global medical guidelines: keep HbA1c levels under 7 percent, manage blood pressure, and get yearly foot and retina exams. These steps can sharply lower the risk of complications.
Awareness Campaigns Now Target the Youth
The Kuwait Diabetes Society, active since 1996, continues to lead nationwide campaigns to educate the public. This year’s World Diabetes Day activities saw a strong turnout from young people, with free blood sugar checks and on-site advisory booths.
The Society plans to roll out more workshops, medical training sessions, and community events throughout the year. With Ramadan approaching, it will also introduce daily initiatives to guide patients and those fasting.
