American culture is very diverse and some stereotypes and assumptions keep repeating in all around the world. Some are harmless jocular remarks, while others reflect values which Americans hold seriously, such as identity, work ethic, freedom and personal choice. The United States is a diverse country of life-styles, beliefs, and backgrounds and many feel frustrated when an outsider attempts to boil down the whole culture to superficial concepts. These assumptions too often elicit defensive responses when they fail to appreciate the complexity of American life.
