Long before the renowned ancient fleets and recorded history, the exchange of goods by sea was already taking place, and an astonishing discovery made in the vicinity of Greece is a solid proof of it. Lying undisturbed next to the islet of Dokos is the oldest known underwater wreck in the world which is estimated to be around 2200 BC, more than 4,200 years ago. The site was found in the 1970s and after a careful study of it, the site surprised the archaeologists with the extraordinarily preserved pottery cargo which provided a rare glimpse into the early days of seafaring, trading, and even daily life in the Aegean during the Bronze Age.
