An 8-year-old boy was seriously injured after being bitten by a shark while snorkeling off the coast of Key Largo, Florida, on Labor Day. The child sustained significant wounds and was airlifted to a Miami trauma center for emergency treatment, highlighting the dangers even in popular family-friendly waters.

The Attack Off Key Largo

The incident occurred around 3:24 p.m. on Monday, September 1, 2025, near Horseshoe Reef, approximately four miles from Key Largo. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the boy was snorkeling with his father and a sibling when he was bitten by a shark on his leg, above the knee. Additional bites to an arm were reported by emergency responders.

Emergency Response

A nearby dive vessel operated by Horizon Divers quickly came to the boy’s aid after the attack. The crew applied two tourniquets to control the substantial bleeding and provided initial medical assistance. The boy was transported to Garden Cove Marina from where he was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

Medical Condition and Treatment

According to Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay, the boy was in severe condition and underwent surgery Monday evening. Emergency dispatch audio described the victim as pale, with a "significant amount of blood loss," signaling the critical nature of his injuries. Hospital officials have not provided further updates on his condition publicly.

Notification of Authorities and Safety Precautions

The U.S. Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were notified following the attack and assisted with monitoring and safety efforts in the area. Officials continue to caution swimmers and snorkelers about remaining vigilant and aware of marine life, especially during peak tourist periods.

Community Support and Ongoing Concerns

The shark attack, though infrequent, strikes alarm in communities that rely on tourism and family recreation. Local residents and officials expressed concern for the young victim and their family. Incidents like this prompt renewed discussions about beach safety and the balance between enjoying natural habitats and mitigating risks.
