Why do cats have so much fat in their kidneys?

Cats have an unusual amount of fat surrounding their kidneys compared with many other mammals. Scientists have long been interested in why feline kidneys are so closely associated with adipose tissue. Veterinary imaging research confirms that fat within the renal sinus is a normal feature of feline kidneys, while anatomical studies have documented the thick fatty tissue surrounding them.
