The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Monday, June 1, that its air force had struck and destroyed an air base it claims was used by the US military to launch attacks on Iranian territory. The IRGC did not specify the location of the strike but stated it came in response to what it described as a US attack on a communications tower in Sirik, a region in Iran’s Hormozgan province near the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, the IRGC warned that any repetition of such actions would provoke a response “completely different in scale and nature,” adding that the US would bear full responsibility for escalation.
The announcement coincided with reports from Kuwaiti authorities, who confirmed that missiles and drones were fired into its territory, raising concerns about regional spillover from the escalating tensions.
The IRGC’s statement followed US military strikes on two Iranian sites—Goruk and Qeshm Island—which the US Central Command (CENTCOM) described as “self-defence.” These locations are also situated in Hormozgan province, near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping corridor.
The Strait of Hormuz has long been a flashpoint in regional tensions, with both Iran and the US accusing each other of destabilizing actions. The latest exchange underscores the fragile security situation in the area, where maritime traffic and military posturing remain highly sensitive issues.
