Supermarkets and home goods stores across the UK are seeing a sudden rise in demand for everyday essentials like tinned food, bottled water, and emergency equipment. This shopping surge comes right after the UK government issued new advice asking families to prepare for potential national disruptions.

High Demand for Food and Emergency Electronics

Popular online grocer Ocado reported that several brands of bottled water, beans, and soup were completely out of stock. Frozen food chain Iceland recorded a 40 per cent jump in sales for tinned food, while supermarket chain Booths noticed a similar trend.

Along with food supplies, people are buying electronics to prepare for power outages. Stores such as Robert Dyas and Maplin reported higher sales for items like torches, batteries, and power banks.

"Within hours of the Be Ready announcement we saw people reach for the basics – a torch, a wind-up radio, a power bank. Torch sales nearly quadrupled and radio sales almost doubled in three days," said Ollie Marshall, managing director at Maplin.

What Is the 'Be Ready' Emergency Advice?

The UK government published guidance encouraging households to be ready to support themselves for at least three days during an emergency. Authorities highlighted potential risks such as bad weather, flooding, power cuts, and other unexpected disruptions.

The official emergency checklist includes the following practical items:

  • Bottled water and non-perishable food
  • Hand sanitiser, warm clothing, and blankets
  • Spare cash and printed copies of key documents
  • Torches, batteries, and wind-up radios

Security Minister Dan Jarvis said the move "brings the UK into line with many of our European peers who also have the three-day message at the heart of their campaign".

Strong Sales for Outdoor Equipment Stores

The guidance also created a massive boost for outdoor and survival gear shops. Preppers Shop UK reported a 650 per cent surge in sales for "off-grid" supplies, along with social media guides on how to pack a simple "grab and go" emergency bag.

UK officials expressed support for the public's quick response. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said it was "encouraging that people are taking practical steps" to get ready.

"Having a few everyday essentials at home, from tinned food to torches, helps households prepare for disruption, whether that's flooding, power cuts or burst pipes," he added. "We can all play our part in making Britain more resilient."
