Kuwait Cabinet confirms National and Liberation Day break, creating an extended weekend for celebrations and pride across the nation.

Kuwait’s Cabinet has officially announced a four-day holiday period in observance of National Day and Liberation Day in 2026, providing an extended break for public sector employees and many residents, authorities confirmed Tuesday, February 10.

Under the decree issued during a weekly Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, work in all ministries, government agencies, public authorities and institutions will be suspended on Wednesday, February 25 and Thursday, February 26 to mark National Day and Liberation Day, with regular working hours resuming on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

When combined with the regular Friday and Saturday weekend, the announcement effectively creates a four-day break for many public sector employees, offering an opportunity for widespread participation in national festivities and family time.

National Day, celebrated annually on February 25, commemorates the anniversary of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah’s ascension and Kuwait’s ongoing journey as a sovereign state. The following day, February 26, is observed as Liberation Day, honoring the country’s liberation from Iraqi occupation in 1991.

Celebrations typically include parades, patriotic events and cultural activities that highlight national unity and pride among citizens and residents. Public spaces and buildings are often adorned with Kuwait’s flag and colours, reflecting the festive spirit of this annual occasion.

While public sector offices will be closed on the holiday dates, the Cabinet also noted that entities with special operational responsibilities, including essential services, will determine their own holiday schedules in coordination with relevant authorities, ensuring continuity of critical functions during the break.

The extended holiday aligns with Kuwait’s tradition of marking these key national milestones and supports efforts to foster communal celebration and remembrance of the country’s history and achievements.
