IIFA 2026 to be Hosted in Asia on This Date
The 25th edition of the International Indian Film Academy Awards returns to Asia in August-September, introducing a new global best film category and expanded digital initiatives.

The International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards 2026 is scheduled to take place in Asia during the August-September window, marking a significant milestone in the event's history. Andre Timmins, the founder and director of the awards, confirmed that while a preliminary event known as IIFA Utsavam will be held in Telangana in October, the main gala will return to the Asian continent to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise.

The 2026 edition aims to expand its scope beyond a single nation, with plans to collaborate with multiple countries across the region. The event will feature a diverse lineup of activities, including digital awards, masterclasses, and screenings of tribute films. Additionally, the organizers intend to invite numerous international digital stars to participate, reinforcing the gala's role as a bridge between Indian cinema and the global audience.
A major structural change for the upcoming ceremony is the introduction of an "International Best Film" category. Modeled after the Academy Awards' approach to global cinema, this new segment will allow production houses from around the world to apply for recognition, thereby incorporating international films into the IIFA fold for the first time.
Organized by Wizcraft International, the IIFA Awards have a storied history of traveling globally since their inception in London in 2000. Past host cities have included Johannesburg, Singapore, Amsterdam, Dubai, Thailand, Macau, Toronto, Bangkok, Madrid, and Abu Dhabi. Despite the event's recent 25th-anniversary celebration in Jaipur, the core philosophy remains rooted in taking Indian cinema abroad to foster international collaboration, business opportunities, and cultural exchange.
In conjunction with the main awards, the organization has rolled out several new initiatives to broaden its reach. These include "IIFA Connects," a monthly industry gathering in Mumbai; "IIFA Digital Awards" dedicated to streaming content; and "IIFA Honours," a lifetime achievement category recognizing artists with contributions spanning over three decades. A separate "IIFA Tributes" segment is also planned to honor deceased artists. Specific plans include a tribute to veteran actor Dharmendra, featuring screenings of his iconic works, and potential honors for actor Anil Kapoor.
The event's organizers also highlighted the enduring legacy of their parent company, Wizcraft, referencing the historic 1996 visit of pop icon Michael Jackson to India. This visit, which saw massive public engagement and meetings with cultural and political figures, inspired the company's vision of bringing global entertainment to India and vice versa. As part of this ongoing cultural dialogue, Wizcraft is preparing to host a special screening of the upcoming biographical film "Michael," directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson, which is set for theatrical release on April 24.
The 2026 IIFA Awards promise to be a comprehensive celebration of cinematic excellence, blending traditional accolades with modern digital engagement and international cooperation.
