You see it during silent times at work or in family get-togethers, when some words change the atmosphere. It happens that people talk and do not think about the words, throwing out expressions which fall wrong and the conversation narrows down. Simple explanations to a narcissist of what they have done wrong or their failures before others are known to instigate self-defense, which lasts long. It is that backlash you get later, the narrowing of eyes or change of subject. I have witnessed it stretch and stretch and everyone was left somewhat off-balance with questions as to why the exchange had gone so sour in such a short time.
