At least eight people were killed and 26 others injured after a passenger bus crashed in southern Turkey’s Antalya province on Sunday, according to local authorities. The deadly accident occurred on a highway slip road in the Dosemealti district, northwest of Antalya city centre.
Footage aired by state broadcaster TRT showed the bus lying on its side along an embankment, highlighting the severity of the crash. The vehicle was reportedly travelling overnight from Tekirdag in northwestern Turkey when it veered off the road.
Antalya Governor Hulusi Sahin confirmed the casualty figures and said several of the injured remain in critical condition. Speaking to TRT, Sahin pointed to hazardous weather conditions in the area. “The ground was wet and there was also fog in the area. It’s not a place to speed, but it seems the bus was speeding,” he said.
According to the DHA news agency, the impact of the crash was so severe that some passengers were thrown from the vehicle. Emergency services rushed to the scene, providing medical assistance and transferring the injured to nearby hospitals.
The accident comes as Antalya, one of Turkey’s most popular Mediterranean tourist destinations, has experienced heavy rainfall over recent days, raising concerns about road safety during adverse weather conditions. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
