Everything to Know About Margot Robbie's Taj Mahal Necklace
From Mughal Emperors to Elizabeth Taylor — The Storied Journey of an Iconic Diamond Worn by Margot Robbie
At the world premiere of Wuthering Heights in Los Angeles on January 28, 2026, Australian actress Margot Robbie turned heads not just for her fashion but for an extraordinary piece of jewellery she wore, the Taj Mahal necklace, valued at about ₹74 crore (around $8 million).
Robbie accessorised her dramatic Schiaparelli couture gown with this legendary necklace — one of the most fascinating jewels in history thanks to its deep cultural roots and cinematic legacy.
The heart-shaped Taj Mahal diamond at the centre of the necklace carries an inscription in the Parsee language that translates to “Love is Everlasting”. It also bears the name of Nur Jahan, the Mughal empress who first received the gem from her husband, Emperor Shah Jahangir. Historians believe the diamond later passed down to Shah Jahan’s son and was associated with his beloved wife Mumtaaz Mahal, the inspiration for the Taj Mahal mausoleum itself, giving the gem its evocative name.

In 1971, the historic stone was acquired by Cartier, which mounted it in a lavish design featuring jade, red gemstones, table-cut diamonds, and a woven gold-and-ruby chain, transforming it into the iconic necklace known today.
The jewel entered Hollywood legend in the early 1970s when Cartier gifted it to screen icon Elizabeth Taylor on her 40th birthday. It was presented by her then-husband, actor Richard Burton, and quickly became emblematic of their famously passionate, sometimes turbulent relationship.
Over the decades, the piece has remained one of the most storied items in Taylor’s jewellery archive and a symbol of luxury, romance, and history intertwined across continents and eras.
By choosing to wear the Taj Mahal necklace at the Wuthering Heights premiere, Margot Robbie wasn’t just making a fashion statement, she was tapping into centuries of love stories, royal heritage, and Hollywood nostalgia all in one breathtaking statement piece.
