Aswan International Women Film Festival 2026 Returns This April
The 10th edition honors pioneer Aziza Amir, launches beginner workshops, and offers grants for 10 short films addressing women's issues in Southern Egypt.
The Aswan International Women's Film Festival is set to return to Egypt from April 20 to April 25, 2026, marking its historic 10th edition. Under the theme "Cinema for Society," the festival aims to harness the power of film to address critical social issues, continuing its legacy as Egypt's first and only major event dedicated exclusively to women's creativity.
This year's milestone edition will be held under the auspices of the Ministries of Culture, Tourism, and Social Solidarity, the National Council for Women, the Aswan Governorate, and the Tourism Promotion Authority, alongside a roster of local and international partners to be announced soon. The festival's visual identity, crafted over a decade by designer Hesham Ali, will once again take center stage. For this anniversary, the official poster pays tribute to Aziza Amir, a foundational figure in Egyptian cinema and a true pioneer for women in the industry.
In a significant expansion of its educational mandate, the festival has announced the launch of a new session of the Aswan Cinema Workshops. Designed to train young beginners in the art of filmmaking, the program runs in parallel with a logistical grant to produce 10 short films (either fiction or documentary).
The workshop covers all essential aspects of production, including screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, and production. Trainees will actively participate in every stage of creating these 10 films, which are slated to be screened as part of the festival's official activities. Applications for the beginners' training workshop opened today, inviting aspiring filmmakers to join the program.
The festival has also opened its submission window for film projects that tackle pressing women's issues, including violence against women, social patterns of oppression, inequality, and the unique challenges faced by communities in Southern Egypt. Filmmakers at any stage of development—whether in pre-production, production, or development—are eligible to apply.
A specialized production consulting team will be available to support selected projects, offering the opportunity to implement the film's production through the festival's resources. Priority will be given to creative young women and men from Southern Egypt. Submitted film projects must not exceed a duration of seven minutes.
By combining high-level cinematic celebration with grassroots training and production support, the 10th Aswan International Women's Film Festival seeks to empower a new generation of storytellers while honoring the pioneers who paved the way.
