A Community in Mourning
The Islamic Centre of San Diego, located in the Clairemont community, is not only a place of worship but also home to the Bright Horizon Academy, an Islamic school. Imam Taha Hassane expressed his shock and grief over the attack, calling it an “extremely outrageous” act of violence against a sacred space.
The Attack and Investigation
The shooters, dressed in camouflage gear, opened fire outside the mosque, where the bodies of the victims were later found. Police Chief Wahl revealed that the mother of one of the suspects had contacted authorities two hours before the shooting, reporting that her suicidal son was missing and that several firearms were unaccounted for from their home. A note containing hate rhetoric was also discovered.
The FBI has joined the investigation, and authorities are treating the case as a potential hate crime until further evidence emerges.
Police Response and Public Reaction
Footage showed dozens of police cars and officers surrounding the mosque, with some aiming rifles at the building in a tense standoff. The response highlighted the seriousness of the situation and the authorities’ commitment to ensuring public safety.
U.S. President Donald Trump called the shooting a “terrible situation” and pledged to closely examine the incident.
A Call for Unity
The attack has left the Muslim community in San Diego grieving and seeking answers. Leaders and residents are calling for unity and solidarity in the face of such senseless violence.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The Islamic Centre remains closed as a precaution, and counselling services are being provided to those affected.
