A rare Hermès Birkin handbag once owned by British actress and singer Jane Birkin is set to be auctioned in Abu Dhabi this December. The black leather bag, titled “Le Birkin Voyageur,” will headline the inaugural Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week, taking place at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort from December 2 to 5.
The event will feature an exclusive lineup of auctions, exhibitions, masterclasses, and panel discussions celebrating luxury craftsmanship and collectible art.
The handbag—one of only four Birkins ever personally owned by Jane Birkin—was gifted to her by Hermès after she sold her original prototype Birkin in 1994 to support a French AIDS charity. That initial sale established Birkin’s long-standing tradition of auctioning her handbags for charitable causes, with Hermès replacing them each time. Over her lifetime, the fashion house presented Birkin with a total of four Birkins, each carrying its own story and legacy.
Now, this particular handbag—used by the star between 2003 and 2007—is set to make its return to the spotlight after more than 15 years. Estimated between $230,000 and $430,000, Le Birkin Voyageur takes its name from a handwritten message by Birkin inside the bag, symbolizing her creative and personal connection to the iconic accessory.
The announcement follows the record-breaking sale of Birkin’s original Hermès Birkin at Sotheby’s Paris in July, which fetched a staggering $10.1 million, making it the most valuable handbag ever sold at auction.
The sale reignited global fascination with both Hermès craftsmanship and Birkin’s personal collection, positioning this Abu Dhabi auction as one of the most anticipated luxury events of the year.
More than just a handbag, Le Birkin Voyageur represents a piece of fashion history—an emblem of timeless elegance and a reflection of Birkin’s humanitarian spirit. For collectors, it offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a part of the story behind one of the world’s most iconic fashion symbols, brought to life by the woman whose name it bears.
