Here’s the latest from Caracas: four Americans detained in Venezuela have been released by the interim government, the U.S. State Department confirmed Tuesday. This marks the first known release of American prisoners since Nicolás Maduro was ousted.

Who was released

At least four Americans who had been held in Venezuelan detention are now free. A U.S. State Department team even traveled to Venezuela to assist with their release. Officials welcomed the move as an “important step in the right direction.”

At least five Americans had been detained in recent months. Under Maduro, detaining U.S. citizens was often used as political leverage in negotiations with Washington.

Why it matters

The interim government, led by Delcy Rodríguez, has begun releasing dozens of political prisoners in what officials describe as steps toward restoring stability and easing tensions. Last week, several high-profile prisoners, including opposition politicians, were freed in gestures “to seek peace.”

Human rights groups note that the pace is still slow: out of over 800 political detainees, only 56 had been released as of Monday evening. Hundreds of families continue to wait for loved ones to be freed.

U.S. reaction

The Trump administration has been vocal in calling for the release of all political prisoners in Venezuela, asserting that it has the leverage to push the interim government to cooperate. On Sunday, Trump noted that Venezuela had “started the process, in a BIG WAY, of releasing their political prisoners,” adding, “I hope those prisoners will remember how lucky they got that the USA came along and did what had to be done.”
